The Glass Bar – a magical underwater world by Kjell Engman

Welcome to the Glass Bar – an imaginative and colourful underwater world created by glass artist Kjell Engman. Here you are surrounded by art, stories and details that evoke curiosity in every glance.

Look up at the chromed, undulating ceiling and you get the feeling of being beneath the water's surface. All around, fish are swimming, the reeds float quietly and message in a bottles drift by – everything created in glass. Every detail contributes to the feeling of being on a voyage of discovery in an enchanted underwater environment.

Kjell Engman has always been fascinated by music and the performing arts. Therefore, the tables in the bar are called Ballet – a tribute to his dream of sitting in the middle of a dance performance and experiencing the movement at close quarters.

In the middle of the bar stands the glass sculpture The weekly bar. The undulating bottles symbolise the ups and downs of the week and are inspired by a friend who constantly worries about tomorrow. The sculpture is both humorous and thought-provoking – just like much of Kjell's art.

The bar stools are made of glass and equipped with both heating and LED lighting. The combination of artistic expression and technical innovation is characteristic of Kjell Engman's work.

The sparkling shapes hanging from the ceiling are not icicles, as many believe. They represent the sun's rays breaking through the water's surface, creating a magical interplay of light in the room.

On the wall, the glass installation gazes I See You back at the visitors. The work consists of 124 hand-shaped glass vials that together form an eye. The result is a fascinating illusion that gives the feeling that the artwork follows every movement in the room.

Even the lighting is part of the story. The lights by the bar are shaped like scuba tanks, while the coloured glass forms in the ceiling represent reeds floating on the water's surface.

Kjell Engman is one of Sweden's best-known glass artists. Drawing inspiration from the animal kingdom, the world of music and human stories, he creates art that engages all the senses. His work is characterised by a strong narrative joy and can be found in both public settings and art collections worldwide.
